A chart measures a design in stitches. Fabric count measures how many stitch squares fit in one inch of fabric. Together, they give you a starting point for the finished stitched area.
The simple calculation
Divide the stitch width by the fabric count to estimate width in inches. Do the same for height. For example, a 70 by 84 stitch design on 14-count Aida is about 5 by 6 inches of stitching.
Add a margin
The stitched area is smaller than the fabric you should cut. Leave extra fabric around every edge for holding the work, finishing, and framing. The margin you need depends on your hoop, frame, and finishing method.
Use the estimate while editing
If the result feels too large, reduce the chart width or choose a different fabric count. Review the pattern again after changing either setting: small details and color areas can change as the grid changes.
